    Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains an important public health problem in all districts of Central Java. The DHF incidence rate in Central Java was 3,39 cases/ 10,000 population in 2006. The DHF incidence has been increasing year by year in some subdistricts, but in some others the incidence rate was low. Social capital is a societal variable that was hypothesized to be related with health-related activities of community. This study aimed to test and estimate the association between social capital and larva index of Aedes aegypti. This study was analytic by use of cross-sectional design. It was carried out from October to November 2007. A sample of 150 households residing in 30 villages in 3 DHF endemic subdistricts, Sragen district, was taken for this study. All households with DHF cases in 2007 were taken as sample. Likewise some households surrounding the cases were taken purposively as another sample. The dependent variable was larva index. The independent variable was social capital. The questionnaire used to measure social capital consisted of 21 items and comprised various dimensions of social capital. The data was analyzed by use of Chi Square, with OR as the measure of association. The data analysis employed SPSS v.15 and OpenEpi programs. The study showed an association between social capital and larva index. Households located in villages with low social capital had the probability of presenting Aedes aegypti larva 1.5 times higher than those located in villages with high social capital (OR= 1.53; CI95% 0.76 to 3.06). This study concludes that there is an association between social capital and larva index. Social capiat is a variable protective to decreasing high larva index in endemic subdistricts. It is suggested that the community potentials be enhanced so that the community is willing and able to solve local health problems, including those of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.
