    Abstract

Poor nutritional status of children under five years of age remains a major public health concern in Sragen district. The prevalence of undernourished children was 12.64% in Sragen district in 2006. Grossman’s theory proposes that education enhances the efficiency of health production, so that the more eduacted are healthier than the less educated. Likewise, Bolin et al. stipulate that social capital improves the efficiency of health production. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that maternal education, family income and social capital are related to the nutritional status of children under five years of age.. This study was analytical using cross-sectional design. It was conducted in September to November 2007. The target population was mothers and their children aged under five years old who lived in Sragen district. Sixty malnourished children living in 6 subdistricts were selected by exhaustive sampling for the study. A sample of 120 similar children with normal nutritional status was selected at random. A questionnaire consisting of 11 items were developed to measure social capital. Weight for age (WAZ) score was used as the indicator of the nutritional status. The data was analyzed by Chi Square test which was run under SPSS v. 15 program and Stata v.7 Results of the study supported the hypothesis that maternal education (X2= 89.89; p=0.000), family income (X2=90.00; p=0.000), and social capital (X2= 144.78; p=0.000), respectively, were significantly associated with the nutritional status of chldren under five years old. This study concludes that maternal education, family income, and social capital, respectively are associated with the nutritional status of children under five years old. It is suggested that study groups are developed for mothers who have children under five years old, in order to ehnace maternal knowledge in nutritional issues. It is also recommnended that community participation be revitalized as to facilitate access to resources available within the community that can be used to improve the nutritional status of children under five years old.
