THE EFFECT OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING USING THE TYPE OF STUDENT TEAM ACHIEVEMENT DIVISION (STAD) TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN LEARNING ACCOUNTING (A Comparative Study Conducted at the Eleventh Grade Students of Social Science of SMA Negeri I Sukoharjo in the Academic Year of 2010/2011). Thesis. Surakarta: Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University, May, 2011. This study is aimed at knowing whether there is theeffect of cooperative learning using the type of student team achievementdivision (STAD) towards the students’ achievement in learning accounting or not, especially at the eleventh grade students of Social Science of SMA Negeri I Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2010/2011). The method in this study was quasi experimental research. The populations were all students of the eleventh gradestudents of Social Science of SMA Negeri I Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2010/2011. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling in which thesamples in the population were taken randomly. There were four classes to be the population, the eleventh grade of Social Science 1, the eleventh grade of Social Science 2, the eleventh grade of Social Science 1, the eleventh grade of Social Science 3, the eleventh grade of Social Science 4. As the result, the control class was the eleventh grade of Social Science 3 and the experimental class was the eleventh grade of Social Science 4. There were 36 students for each class. The variables used in this study were divided into two, free variable in the form ofthe model of cooperative learning using the type of STAD and certain one in the form of the students’ achievement in learning accounting. Research’s design used was Matched Group Design. The data in this study was the students’ achievement in learning accounting which is resulted from the multiple choice test. The analysis prerequisite was tested by using t-matching in order to match both of two classes started from the same point. Mean matching and variant matching were conducted before calculating t-matching. The hypothesis was tested by using t test in order to know the difference of the students’ achievement between two classes above. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that there is the effect of the implementation of cooperative learning especially using the type of STAD. It can be seen from the difference of the students’ achievement between they who were taught by using STAD and they who were taught by using conventional method. By using STAD, the students’ achievement is better. Based on the result, t 0 > ttor 3.67 > 1.997. So, the model of cooperative learning using the type of student team achievement division (STAD) has the effect towards the students’ achievement in learning accounting in which the students’ achievement increases
