    Abstract

    Diyah Ayu Iswari. D1208552. The Violence Presentation on Indian’s Juvenile through Slumdog Millionaire (Message Studies of the Film By Using Semiology of Communication’s Analysis). Thesis. Department of Communication Science. Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Sebelas Maret University, 2011. Film is a form of communication between its maker and the audiences. Films captured the unfold reality and project it on to the screen. Therefore it can be said that film is directly related to the mass society. In order to produce certain meanings, film makers needs to deliver their message to the audiences. Through its strength and ability to reach various social segmentation, film has often sucedeed to affect and establish the society according to its containing messages. Slumdog Millionaire portray the violence behaviour which still receives by the homeless juvenile in Juhu, Mumbai, India. Slumdog Millionaire’s violence symbols was analyze by researcher because the film revealed the dark truth of India; poverty, slums issues and vagrant juvenile who lives desperate life and often be treated arbitrarily. This research used the analytical semiology of communication which was introduced by Andrik Purwasito, the commentation are intend to interpret the message in the act of communication. When the interaction is being process, the exchange signs (message) between communication participants are occur. The signs interpretation are based by certain principles. The principles consist 7 major test, namely; communication participants, communication context, attributes function, the form of physical attributes, intertextual attributes, intersubjectivity signification, and interpreter intelectuality. The analysis concluded that the film illustrated the existence of violence on Indian’s vagrant juvenile which being done by the law enforcement, civilians, fellow vagrant, local gangs and also relative. The vagrant juvenile had to experienced miserable lives since their early ages where they had to fought for their own lives and be treated arbitrarily without government protection. One of their infliction is to receives violence behaviour such as symbolic violence thus physical violence.
