    Abstract

    This thesis aims (1) to find out the potency of underground river for the water resource documentation in Seropan and Semuluh Caves in Subdistrict Semanu Regency Gunung Kidul, (2) to find out the water requirement for the residents’ daily need in Subdistrict Semanu Regency Gunung Kidul, and (3) to conduct the necessary measures in anticipating the water deficiency in Subdistrict Semanu Regency Gunung Kidul. The method of research employed was a descriptive qualitative one. The sample taken was the water flow rate in underground river of Seropan and Semuluh Caves, as well as the subdistrict Semanu’s residents who utilize the water sources of underground river of Seropan and Semuluh Caves, as many 20 persons. The sampling technique employed was purposive sampling. Meanwhile the technique of collecting data employed was the field observation, documentation and interview. The technique of analyzing data was to find out the potency of underground river for the water resource documentation in Seropan and Semuluh Caves by estimating the water flow rate of underground river in Seropan and Semuluh Caves, to find out the water requirement and to anticipate the water deficiency by conducting interview with the local residents. The results of research on the potency of underground river in Seropan and Semuluh Caves, water requirement for daily need, as well as necessary measures in anticipating the water deficiency in Subdistrict Semanu Regency Gunung Kidul are as follows: 1. The potency of underground river in Seropan and Semuluh Caves, include: a) Seropan Cave 1) The fulfillment of clean water requirement. The society’s utilization with the water-stall system, through the water reservoir (public hydrant) as the service centre and water requirement service with home installation system. 2) The utilization with the irrigation development in Subdistrict Semanu by applying the agribusiness-based plant cultivation technology/ 3) The remained water flow rate after both items fulfilled, is left to flow inside the cave as the underground rived. b) Semuluh Cave Because of the static or stationary properties of water in Semuluh Cave, the remained water flowing is only used to water the land and farm. 2. In order to fulfill the daily need, such as toiletry and cooking, the water needed is about ±134.4 liter/head/day. The amount is still added with the irrigation and cattle requirement for those who have farm or land and cattle. 3. The anticipation of water deficiency for the Gunung Kidul residents, particularly in Subdictrict Semanu by utilizing the existing water sources include: a. Underground river b. Surface river c. PAH (rainy water reservoir) d. Dig well e. Drilled well In addition, the life of majority middle-upper class residents has been improved by the utilization of Drinking Water Local Company (PDAM) service.
