    Abstract

Yos Wahyu Harinta. NIM. S.630306014. Factors Influencing the Velocity of Agriculture Innovation Adoption among Farmers in Gatak sub-district, Sukoharjo region. Supervisors: 1. Prof. Dr. Ir. Totok Mardikanto, MS. 2. Dr. Ir. Suprapti Supardi, MP. Basically, individually, a farmer does not have ability to change his/her farm operation condition. Hence, the assistance from other parties is very important for the farmer. The assistance could be directly in the form of guidance and establishment of farm operation, or indirectly in the form of incentive to promote farmers accepted new innovations to change. To achieve the changes of the farmer’s behavior in order to increase their quality of life, there is necessary to deliver agriculture innovation through agricultural extension activity. Therefore, the agricultural development information that will be delivering to the farmers has to be able to promote changes with characteristics of ‘alteration’ that usually referred to ‘innovativeness’. Currently, Sukoharjo region implemented Pengelolaan Tanamanand Sumber Daya Terpadu(PTT) to increase rice production. Pengelolaan Tanamanand Sumber Daya Terpadu(PTT) is an ‘ekoregional’ method to increase agriculture productivity with efficiency principles. The development of innovation technology with PTT method applying synergism principle that is the influence of the whole technology components on productivity is higher comparing with the influence of the technology component partially on productivity. There are many superior components of PTT Rice, which are: Planting high-yielding variety; Fertilizing as necessary; Controlling plant disease and pest with integrated method; and Handling the harvest process and post-harvest well. Gatak is one of sub-district in Sukoharjo region that has 14 villages with farmers association in all of the villages. This study assesses the influence of velocity of agriculture innovation adoption among farmers in Gatak sub-district, Sukoharjo region; and examines whether there are relationship among the factors on the velocity of agriculture innovation adoption among farmers in Gatak sub-district, Sukoharjo region. This study is a survey research, which is a study using sample from population and using questionnaire as a main method to gather data. The unit analysis is an individual farmer. This survey study is a survey with explanatory/confirmatory to explain causal relationship and hypothesis testing (Singarimbun and Effendi, 1989: 3). This study is conducted in Gatak sub-district, Sukoharjo region during August –December 2009. The population in this study is farmer association in Gatak sub-district, Sukoharjo region; while the sample of the study is the management and the member of the farmer association in Gatak sub-district, Sukoharjo region. The sampling method in this study is purposive sampling method which is a technique to get sample by applying specific characteristicsin choosing the sample (Djarwanto, 2001: 18). The sample in this study is farmer who became the management of the farmer association and member of the farmer association in Gatak sub-district, Sukoharjo region. Gatak sub-district consists of 14 villages with 31 farmer association. There are 9 farmer associations with advance class as the sample. There are 10 farmers (3 management and 7 members) of each of the farmer association, resulting of 90 respondents in total as the sample. The methods to get the data are interview with questionnaire and observation. The data is analyzed with statistics central tendency measurement, correlations and path analysis technique. The statistics analysis reveals the results as follows: 1. The factors influencing the velocity of agriculture innovation adoption among farmers in Gatak sub-district, Sukoharjo region, are: Characteristics Innovations (X1), Characteristics Potential User (X2), and Communication Media (X4). From factor X1, the indicators that significantly influencing the velocity of agriculture innovation adoption are the benefit and the observability of the innovation. From factor X2, the indicators that significantly influencing the velocity of agriculture innovation adoption are social economics status (i.e., farmer control over farm area); personal variable (i.e., courage to take risk); and communication behavior (i.e., the level of participation in farmer group, inter-personal communication, and look for information). While from factor X4, the indicator that significantly influencing the velocity of agricultural innovation adoption are inter-personal network and mass media. 2. Based on indirect effect analysis, it can be seen that X1 àX3 àY with a negative sign of influence; X2 àX3 àY with a negative sign of influence; and X5 àX4 àY with a positive sign of influence. Further analysis with ANOVA and SPSS to test whether there are differences between management and member of the farmers association on the innovation adoption shows that there are differences in theinnovation adoption level between the management and the member of the farmers association with F (1,88) = 47,772; p < 0,05.
