    Abstract

    The high protein feeds such as soybean meal, fish meal and palm kernel cake are considered to be not optimal utilized by ruminant. This due to high protein degradation in the rumen that may decrease the efficiency of utilization of feed protein. Most of the protein is converted into NH3 by the microbe, although the levels of NH3 is sufficient for microbial synthesis. One effort to protect feed protein from rumen degradation is by protecting feed proteins with formaldehyde. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of using protected soybean meal (SBM), fish meal (FM), palm kernel cake (PKC) on pH, NH3 and VFA concentrations, and rumen microbial protein of fistulated ongole cross bred. The research was conducted from October 05th to December 15th 2009 at Experimental Unit, Faculty of Animal Science Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta. The research used three fistulated ongole cross bred cattles with average body weight 289.3 ± 28.3 kg. The research used Latin Square Design with three treatments and three periods. Each treatments consisted of three replications with one cattle each. The rations consisted of fermented rice straw (FRS), concentrate, protected soybean meal (SBM), fish meal (FM), palm kernel cake (PKC). The treatments given were P1 = 40% (FRS) + 54% concentrate + 6% protected FM, P2 = 40% (FRS) + 54% concentrate + 6% protected SBM, P3 = 40% (FRS) + 54% concentrate + 6% protected PKC. Parameters that were observed were pH, NH3 and VFA concentrations, and rumen microbial protein. The result showed that average from three treatments of P1, P2 and P3 for pH 6.40; 6.17; 6.46, NH3 concentration 8.76; 13.30; 8.14 mg/100ml, VFA concentration 120.01; 115.61; 138.52 mmol and microbial protein 41.27; 42.98; perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id 45.03 mg/100ml. Results of analysis of variance indicated that pH, NH3 and VFA concentrations, and microbial protein were not significantly different (P>0.05). In conclusion, the used of protected soybean meal (SBM), fish meal (FM), palm kernel cake (PKC) at the level of 6% did not disturb rumen pH, NH3 and VFA concentrations, and rumen microbial protein of fistulated ongole cross bred.
