    Abstract

Ardianna Nuraeni. S130306002. 2008. THE COMPARISON OF THE SUBTITLES OF SPEECH ACT OF COMPLAINT IN THE MOVIE ENTITLED BAD BOYS II PRESENTED ON TELEVISION AND ON VCD. Thesis. Postgraduate Program of Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. The research aims at comparing the subtitles of speech act of complaint in the movie entitled Bad Boys II presented on television and on VCD. The research is focused on the comparison of translation strategies used by the two translators, and the equivalent level as well as the acceptability level of the subtitles by both translators. The methodology applied in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data were obtained by applying some methods, i.e. content analyzing of the movie, delivering questionnaire to informants, and interviewing. With the data source obtained from the movie entitled Bad Boys II presented on television and on VCD, the research is a productoriented double-case study. The findings show that the television translator and the VCD translator used various translation strategies. Both of them did not only use a certain kind of strategy to translate a speech act of complaint but also two or three strategies at the same time. The use of strategy or combination of strategies by television translator is more varied (23 strategies) than that by VCD translator (20 strategies). The television translator was able to translate the speech act of complaint having higher level of equivalence and acceptability than the VCD translator. The score of equivalent level of television translator is 2.7. From 64 data of speech act of complaint, 44 data are equivalent, 16 data are not equivalent enough, and 4 data are not equivalent. The score of equivalent level of VCD translator is 2.4. From 64 data of speech act of complaint, 37 data is equivalent, 16 data is not equivalent enough, and 11 data is not equivalent. Related to the level of acceptability, the score of television translator’s subtitles is 2.7 and the score of VCD translator’s is 2.5. Television translator translates 45 acceptable data and 19 not acceptable enough data. On the other hand, VCD translator produces 29 acceptable data, 33 not acceptable enough data, and 2 unacceptable data. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the various kinds of translation strategies used by both translators is caused by a number of limitations and rules in film translation (subtitling). It is also found out that the level of equivalence and acceptability of the subtitles of television translator is higher than that of VCD translator. In other words, the subtitles of speech act of complaint by television translator are more qualified than those by VCD translator.
