    Abstract

Abdul Munif, S1302014. TRANSLATION SHIFTS IN PASSIVE CLAUSE FROM NOVEL THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING BY JRR TOLKIEN TRANSLATED BY GITA YULIANI K. Thesis Postgraduate Program of Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. The study is designed to describe translation shifts of transposition, to describe translation shifts of modulation and to classify the translation appropriateness of passive voice due to translation shifts. This research is intended to be a descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by using document and interview. Data in this research are passive voice or passive clauses which have translation shifts of transposition and modulation taken from the novel. The sampling technique used in this study is purposive sampling. The sample criteria of the study are all passive clauses found in the novel and their translation shifts and modulations. The results of the study are: 1) the translation shifts of transposition are realized in several forms. They are unit-shifts 12 data (14 %), structure-shifts 43 data (60 %), and class-shifts 4 data (6 %). 2) the translation shifts of modulation are realized in several forms, too. They are passive-active 20 data (26 %), topic-comment 15 data (19 %), lexical meaning 23 data (30 %), and grammatical meaning 11 data (14 %). 3) based on the translation shifts of transposition and modulation, 69 data (81 %) are translated appropriately, 14 data (16 %) are translated less appropriately, and 2 data (3 %) are translated inappropriately. In conclusion, to get appropriateness in translation, one may use the translation shifts of transposition and modulation. A shift or transposition is a translation procedure involving a change in the grammar from SL to TL, while a modulation is a variation through a change of viewpoint, or perspective and very often of category of thought. This study is significant for translation study to enlarge the translator’s knowledge, especially about the translation-shift in passive clauses.
