    Abstract

    The aims of this research are to find out: (1) whether or not there is an effect of the problem-based learning model with the conventional model on the students’ ability to operate Microsoft word; (2) whether or not there is a difference of effect of the typing ability level with the ten-finger typing technique on the students’ ability to operate Microsoft word; and (3) whether or not there is an interaction of effect between the problem-based learning model with the conventional model and the typing ability level with the ten-finger typing technique on the students’ ability to operate Microsoft word. This research used an experimental one. It was conducted at State High Vocational School 1 of Ngawi and State High Vocational School 1 of Magetan. Its population consisted of 80 students from 2 different classes in Grade XI of the Office Administration Program of State High Vocational School 1 of Ngawi and 120 students from 3 different classes in Grade XI of the Office Administration of State High Vocational School 1 of Magetan. Its samples consisted of 80 students, and were taken through a purposive cluster random sampling technique. Its data were gathered by means of testing methods, namely: (1) test of how to operate Microsoft word and (2) test of the ten-finger typing ability. The data were then analyzed by using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the prerequisite tests of normality test and variance homogeneity test at the significance level of 5%. Based on the results of the research, conclusions are drawn as follows: (1) there is a significant effect of the problem-based learning model with the conventional model on the students’ ability to operate Microsoft word (Fcount > Ftable or 6.06 > 3.97), indicating that the proposed hypothesis is verified ; (2) there is a significant difference of effect between the students with the high ten-finger typing ability and those with the low ten-finger typing ability on their ability to operate Microsoft word (Fcount > Ftable or 15.90 > 3.97), signifying that the proposed hypothesis is verified; and (3) there is a significant interaction of effect between the problem-based learning model with the conventional model and the ten-finger typing ability (the students with the high ten-finger typing ability and those with low the ten-finger typing ability) on their ability to operate Microsoft word (Fcount > Ftable or 4.81 > 3.97), demonstrating that the proposed hypothesis is verified.
