    Abstract

Background: Cervical Cancer is a global health issuewhich is occurred mostly in developingcountries. In Indonesia (2008) prevalence of cervival cancer cases was 100 per 100 thousands women. In Solo, Central Java, the prevalence was high i.e. 2 per 100 housewives. Early detection and treatment of cervical pre cancer have been highly recommended. Early detection by pap smear or IVA has been not yet widely known. One methodto disseminate information about early detection is to conduct health promotion. Objective: This research is aimed to investigate the effect of health promotion towards woman’s knowledge about cervical cancer and her participation in program of early detection of cervical cancer. Method: This research is a kind of quasi experimental study with non randomized pre test post test group design. From the population of 127 housewives which were20 –60 years old and lived at Mojosongo RW 22 Surakarta, the sample of 58 respondents was taken using multistate cluser sampling. The sample was separatedinto two groups, health promotion using leaflet was given to one group while those using movie was given to another. Questionaire based pretest and posttest were conducted to measure respondents’ knowledge and participation before and after treatment. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon’s Signed Rank Test. Result: From data analysis some findings were obtained i.e.: (1) There are significant increases of knowledge (p = 0,000) and participation (p = 0,000) of housewiveswho were given promotion using leaflet. (2) There are significant increases of knowledge (p = 0,000) and participation (p = 0,000) of housewives who were given promotion using movie.(3) Knowledge (p = 0,000) and participation (p = 0,000) of housewives given promotion using movie are higher than those given promotion using leaflet. Conclusion: Health promotion can significantly increaseswoman’s knowledge about cervical cancer and her participation in program of earlydetection of cervical cancer. Promotion using movie gives better results than using leaflet. Keywords : health promotion using leaflet and movie, knowledge about cervical cancer, participation in program of early detection of cervical cancer
