    Abstract

    The aim of this research is to study the effect of temperature and holding time in the liquid carburizing process to t he hardness increase of AISI 1025 steel. This liquid carburizing process uses temperature variation 750 0 C, 800 0 C and 850 0 C, with holding time 30, 60, and 90 minutes. The reagen used is a mixture of NaCN 75%, Na2 CO 3 5% and NaCl 20%. The cooling is done by water quenching. The testing done are micro vickers hardness and microstructural examination. The result of this research shows that the liquid carburizing process can raise the hardness of AISI 1025 steel. The lowest rise of hardness is achieved in tem perature 750 0 C and holding time 30 minutes, i.e . 249,3 VHN, meanwhile the raw material hardness is 193,7 VHN. The hardness tends to increase with the temperature and holding time. The highest improrement of hardness is reached in temperature 850 0 C and h olding time 90 minutes, i.e.982,3 VHN. From microstructural investigation it shows martensite, pearlite and ferite phase with the martensite is dominant in the surface Key word : Heat treatment, liquid carburizing, hardness.
