    Abstract

    The objective of research is to find out the effect of role conflict on the work stress with work uncertainty and work satisfaction as the mediating variable. The problem statements that will be studied are (1) whether or not the role conflict affects the employees’ work stress, (2) whether or not the role conflict affects the employees’ work uncertainty, (3) whether or not the uncertainty affects the employees’ work satisfaction, and (4) whether or not the work satisfaction affects the employees’ work stress. This study belongs to an explanatory research using survey method. The population of research is all employees of PT. Air Mancur Karanganyar. The sample taken was 118 employees. The sampling technique employed was proportional random sampling. The analysis instrument employed in testing the model fitness and the hypothesis proposed was SEM method with AMOS 6.0 program aid. The result of analysis shows the values of Chi-Square (90.501) at significance level (0.081), RMSEA (0.045), CMIN/df (1.240), GFI (0.900), AGFI (0.856), TLI (0.968), and CFI (0.974). The estimation parameter shows that all paths estimated are significant. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the four hypotheses proposed are supported all. It indicates that the role conflict affect directly the work stress as well as can affect indirectly through uncertainty and work satisfaction. The recommendation given to the company is that the company should keep considering and attempting to reduce the increased role conflict among the employees. It can be done by reducing the role demand compellation or role dualism within the job because it is impossible for an employee to deal with the simultaneous situations of two or more role demand at the same time. The reduction of role conflict among the employees will exert the positive effect on the company, that is, to reduce the employee’s uncertainty feeling at working, such as uncertainty in running the task and uncertainty of self-welfare. The uncertainty reduction will affect the increased work satisfaction and will prevent the work stress from occurring. Keywords: role conflict, work stress, uncertainty, work satisfaction.
