    Abstract

    The objectives of this research were to analyze factors influencing demand of red pepper and analyze demand elasticity of red pepper in Surakarta City. Basic method applied in this research was analytic descriptive method. While research location election done intentionally. Surakarta city applied as research location because altough the red pepper demand during research in 1993 until 2007 was relatively fluctuative but if seen in totally the red pepper demand in Surakarta city tend to be increasing. Result of data analysis by using doubled linear regression method. This model has R2 value equal to 79,6%, which meaning that contribution level of the variables of big red pepper price, curly red pepper price, number of residents, and earnings per capita to various demand of big red pepper in Surakarta City equal to 79,6%, while the rest 20,4% influenced by other variables outside research. At F test it was known that variables of big red pepper price, curly red pepper price, onion price, number of residents, and earnings per capita collectively influenced to demand of red pepper in Surakarta City. At t-test it was obtained that research variables partially had real influence to demand of big red pepper in Surakarta City. Price elasticity coefficient had value equal to 0,89, because this value less than one hence the elasticity had inelastic character. Cross elasticity coefficient for curly red pepper had value equal to 1,67 because this elasticity value had positive sign, this indicated that curly red pepper was substitution goods, while elasticity value of onion was equal to 0,84 because this elasticity value had negative sign, this indicated that onion was complementary goods, and earnings elasticity coefficient had value equal to 0,42 because this had positive sign hence this indicated that red pepper was normal goods. As for suggestion given was that government is give more attention to vegetables commercial, especially red pepper so that supply of fresh red pepper in every day and during the year can be designed well.
