    Abstract

Background : Cognitive dysfunction is one of the core symptoms of schizophrenia. As many as 40%-60% of schizophrenic patients have cognitive impairment. These impairments impact on poor functional outcome. Objective : The aims of this study were : 1) to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive remediation in improving cognitive dysfunction of chronic schizophrenia patients in a rehabilitation institution, and 2) to compare the effectiveness of computerized cognitive remediation and non-computerized cognitive remediation. Method : This study was experimental quasi research, with pre- and post-test design. Forty five chronic schizophrenia patients with cognitive dysfunctions were randomly assigned to : 1) computerized cognitive remediation (n = 15), 2) non-computerized cognitive remediation, 3) no cognitive remediation (n = 15). Cognitive dysfunction was assessed using validated Indonesian version of Schizophrenia Cognition Rating Scales (SCoRS). Cognitive remediation module was consisted of 12 sessions, given twice a week, and in group settings. Result : One way ANOVA was used to analyze the effectiveness of computerized and non-computerized cognitive remediation in improving cognitive dysfunction. The result of this research indicated that cognitive remediation, both computerized and non-computerized produced a very statistically significant improvement on cognitive dysfunction (p< 0.01), which could be seen by the decline of SCoRS scores. Post hoc Tuckey test showed that there was no statistically significant effectiveness difference between computerized and non-computerized cognitive remediation (p = 0.449). Conclusion : Cognitive remediation can improve cognitive dysfunction of chronic schizophrenia patients. Both non- and computerized cognitive remediation have no effectiveness difference in improving cognitive dysfunction of chronic schizophrenia patients.
