    Abstract

    Rice stalks can be one of the potential alternative energy resources by converting it into oil by thermochemical liquefaction in the hot compressed water. This research was intended to find a temperature and a pressure which produce a maximum yield of oil, and the contained substances in the oil. A 100 ml cylindrical autoclave used in the experiment was loaded with 5 g dry powdered rice stalks, 2 g catalyst (sodium carbonate) and 70 ml water. After having blown with Nitrogen, the autoclave was heated in the tube furnace until the desired temperature, and then kept at this temperature for 10 min. The liquid product was extracted with n-hexane and the extract was distillated to obtain oil. The results showed that the maximum yield was 29.8% at 280 o C, 6.42 MPa. The oil mostly contained hydrocarbon compounds from C-19 to lower. The main compound was n-octadecane by 6.16% weight. Keywords: liquefaction, hot compressed water, rice stalk
