    Abstract

    Flemish giant rabbit has a potential as an alternative meat producer. It has advantages mostly because of its high protein content and low cholesterol level. In livestock sector, feed is always become an important factor and agricultural by products are commonly used as feed source. One of them is testa : epidermis of chasew seed. It has been used as cattle feed and in this experiment, it is applied to rabbits. The aim of this study was to observe the effect of substitution of corn used in the ration with casew testa on the digestibility of dry and organic matter of male Flemish giant rabbit. The experiment was conducted in the experimental farm of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, Sebelas Maret University which is located on Jatikuwung, Karanganyar from April 24th – June 19th 2009. It used 16 rabbits with average body weight of 771 + 59.81 gram, randomey assigned to 4 treatments and four replicates. Thus the design used was completely randomized design with one factor and four levels. Treatments were P0 (basal diet + 4.5 % corn + 0 % testa cashew), P1 (basal diet + 3 % corn + 1.5 % testa cashew), P2 (basal diet + 1.5 % corn + 3 % testa cashew), P3 (basal diet + 0 % corn + 4.5 % testa cashew). Parameters observed were dry matter intake, consumption of organic matter and the digesbility of both dry and organic matter. Data obtained were then analyzed with one way analysis of Variance (ANOVA); to compore the means of treatments and observe differences among means. The results of this research showed that the feed comsumption of treatments P0, P1, P2 and P3 for dry matter intake were 110.84; 102.04; 101.10 and 100.79 g/head/day, consumption of organic matter 95.53; 93.98; 87.27 and 87.13 g/head/day, digesbility dry matter 66.06; 63.41; 63.33 and 63.20, and digesbility organic matter 67.13; 66.98; 64.68 and 64.46. The analysis of variance showed that the treatments did not show any affect an dry and organic matter comsumption and the digesbility of both dry and organic matter. It can be concluded that testa cashew can be used to substitute a part of corn in the diet without affecting dry and organic matter consumption as well as dry and organic matter digestibilities.
