    Abstract

    Yoniar Effendi, 2006 “A Study of Resistance In Several Varieties of Upland Rice (Oryza sativa L.) on Drought Stress”. Thesis of Postgraduate program, The Study Program of Agronomy, Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta. The purpose of these experiments were to study effect of some amount levels of PEG (Polyethylene glycol) 6000 solution on germination stage of upland rice varieties, study on characters plant growth, physiological and yields changes on drought stress in field experiment. The study consists two experiments, which experiment I is study on germination and early seedling, while experiment II is study on vegetative and generative phase on drought stress. The first and second experiments were done with a completely randomized design (CRD), with consists of two factors and three replicates, In the first experiment, the first treatment factor is the variety of upland rice which consists of ten varieties : Gajah Mungkur, Situ Patenggang, Situ Bagendit, Danau Gaung, Kalimutu, Towuti, Jatiluhur, Limboto, Cirata and Way Rarem. The second treatment factor is the amount level of PEG solution which consists of : 0, 15, 20 and 25 g/l. In the second experiment, the first treatment factor is kinds of upland rice which have the best tenacity drought stress at the first treatment, consist of : Gajah Mungkur, Situ Patenggang, Kalimutu and Towuti. The second treatment factor is the drought stress which consists of : the humidity level in 100, 75, 50 and 25 persen of width capacity. The research was done in Plants Physiology and Biotechnology Laboratory and Green House of Agriculture Faculty in UNS from October 2007 until March 2008. The measuring rod observed in the first experiment is the measuring rod of sprout capacity and vigor index. The observation of measuring rod in the second experiment was done in the character of growth, the physiology change, and the result. The data were analized with F test and continued by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT), regression analysis was done in order to know the effect of measuring test change towards drought stress, correlation analysis was done to find out the relationship between the measuring rods. The result showed that the sprout capacity and vigor index decreased when amount of PEG solution increased, PEG solution in level 25 g/l of water was most optimum for the selection on drought stress tenacity in upland rice. Towuti, Situ Patenggang, Kalimutu and Gajah Mungkur varieties showed the best in on drought stress among the other varieties. The increase on drought stress grip intensity gave very obvious effect and brought the decrease in the plant’s height, the number of saplings, the dry weight of plant, relative growth rate, the width, the number of un-hulled rice in each clump, the dry weight of root; gave very obvious effect and made the plant late blooming; gave obvious effect and made the rate of the empty un-hulled rice increase. Based on the measuring yield of the dry weight of un-hulled rice in each clump, Towuti showed the tendency to have the best tenacity towards on drought stress among the other varieties such as Gajah Mungkur, Situ Patenggang and Kalimutu.
