    Abstract

    The objective of this research is to improve the ability to draw human face sketch on 1st Grade Students Majoring in Fine Arts, State Vocational School of SMK Negeri 9 Surakarta year of 2009/2010. For the students, the result of this research can provide inputs about how to draw human facial sketch according to proportion aspect, sketch drawing technique and human facial expression. For teachers, it can provide inputs to impement direct observational method in drawing human facial sketch in efforts to improve competence in drawing human facial sketch. This research is a class action research with the subject the 1st Grade Students of State Vocational School of SMK Negeri 9 Surakarta year of 2009/2010 amount of 20 students and Mr. Agus Sasmito, Mrs. Hanung Rosifa and Mr. Anang Syahroni as the fine arts subject teacher in SMK N 9 Surakarta year of 2009/2010 as the collaborator of the researcher. This action class research held in March to November using pretest and 2 times cycle from which each cycle covers four actions, they are planning, implementation, observation, analysis and reflection. Data collection method used in this Class Action Research is observation, interview, test, documentation and documentary analysis. This research uses comparative descriptive data analysis and critical analysi that related with the activities in learning process. Based on the results of this research, there can be concluded that the implementation of direct observation method can improve the students’ competence in drawing human facial sketch on 1st grade students majoring in Fine Arts in SMK Negeri 9 Surakarta year of 2009/2010. The improvement achievements on the base of achievability indicator are: In pretest those who included in very good category is of 0%, in cycle I improving to be 5%, and in cycle II improving to be20%; In pretest, those who included in good category is of 0%, in cycle I improving to be 10% and in cycle II improvingto be 50%; In pretest, those who included in sufficient category is of 5%, in cycle I improving to be 40% and in cycle II decreasig to be 20%. In pretest, those who included in less sufficient category is of 15%, in cycle I improving tobe 35% and in cycle II decreasing to be 10%. In pretest, those who included in insufficient category is of 80%, in cycle I decreasing to be 10% and in cycle II decreasing to be 0%.
