    Abstract

    ASRI HANDAYANI. S.130306003. 2009. THE ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION IDEOLOGY AND QUALITY OF MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY IN “LECTURE NOTES ON CLINICAL MEDICINE”. (Thesis. Postgraduate Program in Linguistic, Majoring in Translation Studies. Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta). Objectives: To identify and describe the technique, method and ideology of translation and the quality of medical terminology translation on Lecture Note Kedokteran Klinis. Methods: This was a descriptive, qualitative research. Focused on single case. Objective data was taken from medical terminology of Lecture Notes on Clinical Medicine. Affective data was collected from 3 raters who gave information about accuracy, acceptability and readability of medical terminology translation on the subject book. Purposive sampling was applied in this research. Techniques of collecting data were content analysis, questioner, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Results: The numbers of data were 643 of medical terminologies. The most frequent technique which was applied to translate the medical terminology was calque 233 (36,2%), and the second place was transposition 122 (19%), naturalized borrowing 115 (17,9%), amplification 47 (7,3%), pure borrowing 36 (5,6%), Borrowing English- Latin 32 (5%), addition 19 (3%), borrowing English – Greece 5 (0,8%), description 5 (0,8%), literal translation 4 (0,6%), inversion 3 (0,5%). The accuracy, acceptability and readability of medical translation was influenced by calque technique and borrowing technique (naturalized, pure, English – Latin, English-Greece). The accuracy of the whole techniques were 80,6%, acceptability 90,2% and readability: very easy 39,2%, easy 53,2%, and only 4,5% which was difficult. FGD recommended some notes to revise in order to improve the translation accuracy, acceptability and readability. Recommendations: Calque, transposition, naturalized borrowing, amplification, pure borrowing, borrowing English – Latin, addition, reduction, borrowing English – Greek, description, literal translation and inversion technique were used to translate the medical terminology of the subject book. Literal translation method was used in this medical terminology translation, furthermore the appropriate of translation ideology was foreignisation. The translation of medical terminology of this subject book was accurate, acceptable and readable. The recommendations of FGD should be adhered to in order to improve the translation accuracy, acceptability and readability.
