    Abstract

This research examines the historical relationship between Malagasy and Maanyan languages. Both languages belong to the same language family as a member of the Austronesian language family, more specifically in the western subfamily of Malayo-Polynesian branch. As a member of the Austronesian language family, of course, both languages have similarities and differences in their lexical or phonological features. The purpose of this study was: (1) to describe synchronically the phonological systems of BMs and BMy, (2) to describe the reflexes of Proto-Malayo-Polynesian (PMP) phonemes which have either retention or innovation that occur in BMs and BMy, (3) to describe the historical relationship between BMs and BMy by observing the sound correspondence that can prove the existence of kinship relations between two languages. The data used in this research is secondary data drawn from the collection of data in previous studies for BMy, and primary data especially in the BMs from personal authors as speakers. This research was conducted with the method and framework of diachronic linguistic theory that applies quantitative and qualitative approaches. Both methods were used to find evidence to explain the historical relationship between the two languages studied. Based on lexicostatistical techniques, it is known that the average cognate percentage of the BMs and BMy languages are 48.3%. This proves that the relationship between two languages is included in the members of the same subfamily languages (Western Malayo-Polynesian branch). A qualitative approach using reconstruction techniques showed that some phonological correspondences happened in both languages. This includes: *b > /v in BMs ~ w in BMy/ - # dan # - *k > /h in BMs ~ k in BMy/ # - *l > /d in BMs ~ d in BMy/ - # *p > /f in BMs ~ p in BMy/ - # dan # - *ŋ > /n in BMs ~ ŋ in BMy/ - #
