      Abstract

      Muhammad Amien Prabowo. IMPROVING STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN FINDING MAIN IDEA IN A DISCOURSE TEXT THROUGH SURVEY QUESTION READ RECITE REVIEW (SQ3R) LEARNING MODEL AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (A Classroom Action Research in Fifth Grade of SD Negeri Pelemrejo, Andong, Boyolali 2018/2019 Academic Year). Thesis. Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, July 2019. The objective of this thesis are to improve students’ ability in finding main idea in a discourse and to describe the implementation of SQ3R Learning Model that can improve the students’ ability in finding main idea in a discourse text in fifth grade students of elementary school at SD Negeri Pelemrejo, Boyolali 2018/2019 academic year. Based on the results of the pre-action test of the 17 students, there are 2 students whose ability to find the main idea is high. The results of the pre-action observations shows that the learning steps taken are less systematic so that students are less enthusiastic in learning. The results of the interview showed that students were still having difficulty distinguishing the main sentence from the main idea and the teacher had not applied an appropriate and innovative learning model. The subjects in this thesis were 17 students in fifth grade of SD Pelemrejo. This classroom action research was conducted in three cycles, in which two meetings were conducted in each cycle. The research data were collected using interview, observation, tests, and document analysis. The data obtained in this research consisted of quantitative data and qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive comparative analysis techniques and the qualitative data were analyzed using interactive analysis techniques which consisted of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The data validity was tested by data source triangulation techniques and methodological triangulation technique. The research finding shows that the improvement of students’ ability in finding the main idea in the discourse text in fifth grade students of elementary school at SD Negeri Pelemrejo 2018/2019 academic year had improved when the SQ3R learning model was applied. The improvement was shown from the classical completeness results in pre-action of 11.76% with a class average of 58.91 increasing in the first cycle of classical completeness to 41.18% with a class average of 63.03. In the second cycle, compared to the previous cycle, the improvement has increased with classical completeness of 70.59% with a class average of 73.62. The improvement in the third cycle has increased again with classical completeness of 82.35% with a class average of 78.32. Based on the findings as presented above, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in finding main idea in discourse text in fifth grade students of elementary school at SD Negeri Pelemrejo 2018/2019 academic year can be improved through Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review (SQ3R) learning models.
