Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Sebelas Maret Surakarta 2019. ABSTRACT The study aims to describe and explain: (1) the compliance and violation of the language politeness principles contained in Suara Publik discourse in Merapi newspaper based on Leech’s theory (1983); (2) the implicature and speech act functions of Suara Publik discourse in Merapi newspaper; and (3) the relevance of language politeness principles of Suara Publik discourse in Merapi newspaper with the Indonesian Language learning for Islamic Secondary School. The data included the discourse from a number of short messages sent to Suara Publik column of Merapi newspaper from April to December 2018. There were a total of 108 written messages as the data. It adopted a descriptive qualitative method. The study referred to a number of documents and involved informants as the data source. It also deployed a content analysis and in-depth interview as the data collecting technique. Meanwhile, the data validity utilized source and theoretical triangulation. At last, the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model (1992) was adopted for the data analysis. The interactive analysis model consists of four stages, including data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The findings revealed (1) the forms of compliance and violation of the language politeness principles contained in Suara Publik discourse in Merapi newspaper based on Leech’s theory (1983), consisting of 36 data that represented the compliance to the language politeness principles as well as 40 data that reflected the violation to the language politeness principles, of which were classified into six maxims, including modesty maxim, agreement maxim, approbation maxim, sympathy maxim, tact maxim, and generosity maxim; (2) the forms of implicature and speech act functions of Suara Publik discourse in Merapi newspaper that consisted of insinuation, encouragement, persuasion, critics, and commands; and (3) the relevance of the language politeness principles of Suara Publik discourse in Merapi newspaper with the Indonesian Language learning for the 12th grade of the Islamic Secondary School. The study of language politeness principles is relevant with the first-semester syllabus of 12th grade within the boundary of Curriculum 2013.
