    Abstract

    The article aims to: (1) explore the current features of poetry appreciation textbook utilized by a number of Higher Education institutions in Central Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta; (2) explore the lecturers and students’ requirements for poetry appreciation textbook in a number of Higher Education institutions in Central Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta; (3) develop a poetry appreciation textbook with the implementation of character education values in a number of Higher Education institutions in Central Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta; and (4) reveal the effectiveness of character education-based poetry appreciation textbook in a number of Higher Education institutions in Central Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta. The study deployed Borg and Gall’s procedure which was modified into three stages, including: (1) preliminary study (exploration); (2) model development; and (3) experiment. The preliminary study (exploration) covered the analysis to the previous poetry appreciation textbook’ features based on the lecturers and students’ need analysis for the implementation of character education in the poetry appreciation textbook. The development stage included (a) draft design, (b) FGD, (c) expert judgment, (d) limited experiment, and (e) wide-range experiment. Meanwhile, the experiment deployed One-Way ANOVA formula. The findings revealed that: (1) six Higher Education institutions involved in the study utilized the poetry appreciation textbook with no character education implementation feature; (2) the lecturers and students urgently required character education-based poetry appreciation textbook; (3) a gradual development was deployed in arranging the poetry appreciation textbook, which included draft designing, FGD, expert judgment, limited experiment, and wide-range experiment. The previous draft earned a number of recommendations from the academicians at the FGD. Meanwhile, the expert judgment produced a contextual draft of the poetry appreciation textbook. The limited experiment revealed that the character education-based poetry appreciation textbook contained easy-to-understand features as the material source for the lectures. Meanwhile, the wide-range experiment showed that the Non-Independent Sample T-Test produced Tcalc = 11.496 with Sig = 0.000 < 0.05. The calculation implied that character education-based textbook was appropriate for the Higher Education level; (4) The F-Test proved the effectiveness of the character education-based poetry appreciation textbook, as Fcalc = 3.763 with Sig = 0.0001 < 0.05
