    Abstract

BUDI KUSUMA, D1216016, TEACHER AND STUDENT COMMUNICATION ACTIVITIES (Descriptive Study of Teacher Communication With Students Mentally Disabled At Sekolah Luar Biasa Negeri Surakarta). STUDY PROGRAM OF SCIENCE OF COMMUNICATION, FACULTY OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF MARCH, 2018. Communication activities in schools, especially in class, involve teachers and students. The teacher when the learning process acts more as a communicator and the student acts more as a communicant. In Extraordinary Schools the communication activities carried out by teachers to students certainly have differences from what is usually done by teachers in public schools. There are some students with special needs, one of them is mentally disabled students. Impotence is a person who has intelligence below normal, so that when the teacher conveys learning in the classroom, there are obstacles encountered, especially in communication. So the purpose of this study was to find out the teaching and communication activities of teachers with mentally disabled students and to find out communication activities discussing teachers with mentally disabled students who were in Sekolah Luar Biasa Negeri Surakarta. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with the main data sources obtained from observing observing teaching activities and discussing mentally disabled teachers and students, and interviewing teachers who teach mentally disabled students, while supporting data obtained from documentation such as pictures and other reference materials . The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Teachers who teach are teachers of mentally disabled students at the elementary school level, because the teachers who are observed have credibility and experience who have long taught mentally disabled students, and the students observed are fifth grade students of elementary school, because fifth grade tuna students have a number of students the most. Then apply it to the study of communication science, namely interpersonal communication, and link it with the symbolic theory of interactionism by discussing forms of verbal communication and non-verbal communication. Based on the results of the study it can be seen that the communication activities carried out by mentally disabled teachers and students while in the classroom are teaching and discussing, involving forms of verbal communication and non-verbal forms of communication. When teaching and discussion activities are carried out there are communication barriers, namely problems in learning and concentration. The teacher uses an individual approach directly to students to be able to overcome the obstacles that occur.
