    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Debby Kirana Putri. IMPROVING SOCIAL STUDIES LEARNING ABOUT TYPES OF ECONOMIC BUSINESS AND ACTIVITIES IN INDONESIA THROUGH DISCOVERY LEARNING MODELS IN STUDENTS GRADE V IN SD NEGERI 2 KALIJIREK ACADEMIC YEAR 2018/2019. Thesis, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta, January 2019. The objectives of this study were: (1) to describe the steps to implement the Discovery Learning model, (2) to improve social studies learning about types of business and economic activities through the Discovery Learning model, (3) to describe the constraints and solutions to the application of the Discovery Learning model in improving social studies learning of students grade V of SD Negeri 2 Kalijirek. This research was a collaborative classroom action research (CAR) carried out in three cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subject of this study was the fifth grade students of SD Negeri 2 Kalijirek Academic Year 2018/2019, totalling 16 students. The data used was in the form of qualitative data, namely the application of the Discovery Learning model and quantitative data including the test of learning outcomes in social studies subject. Data collection techniques used observation, interviews, and tests. Data validity used technique triangulation and sources. Analysis of quantitative and qualitative data included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that: (1) the application of the Discovery Learning model to improve social studies learning about the types of business and economic activities carried out with steps as: (a) stimulation, (b) problem statements, (c) data collection, (d) data processing, (e) verification, (f) generalization; (2) the application of the Discovery Learning model could improve social studies learning about the types of business and economic activities in the fifth grade students of SD Negeri 2 Kalijirek academic year 2018/2019 as evidenced by the results of teacher’s observation in the first cycle was 72.37%, second cycle was 81.50%, and third cycle was 94.00%. The average percentage of students’ observations in the first cycle was 67.62%, the second cycle was 80.75% and the third cycle was 91.50%. Students’ learning outcomes were completed in the first cycle of 71.88%, the second cycle was 84.50%, and the third cycle was 93.75%; (3) the obstacles in this study were: (a) there were only few students who dared to ask, (b) students were less active in giving responses to the results of the discussion; As for the solutions provided by researchers are (a) the teacher stimulates students to ask questions by giving questions to students related to learning material and (b) giving awards to students who give responses. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of the Discovery Learning model could improve social studies learning about the types of businesses and economic activities in Indonesia in the fifth grade students of SD Negeri 2 Kalijirek academic year 2018/2019.
