    ABSTRACT Dewi Andriani. 2007. PRODUCTION OF BIOSURFACTANTS USING SOYBEAN OIL THROUGH BIOTRANSFORMATION BY Rhodococcus rhodochrous AND THEIR APPLICATION FOR RECOVERY CADMIUM METAL ION. Thesis. Chemistry Department. Mathematics and Science Faculty. Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta. Production of biosurfactants through biotransformation using soybean oil by Rhodococcus rhodochrous and their application for recovery cadmium metal ion had been done. Soybean oil was chosen because it contains high unsaturated fatty acid. This research was conducted to produce biosurfactants with optimum condition, to find out the functions group and the character of biosurfactants, and to study their ability for recovery cadmium metal ion. The production of biosurfactants was optimized at different concentration of soybean oil in fermentation medium i.e. 0%, 5%, 10%, 20% (v/v) and variation of time fermentation from 0 until 12 days. The optical density, surface tension, and emulsification index were observed every day during 12 days. Recovery of biosurfactants was done by extraction using increasing polarity rate of the solvent, i.e. the n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and buthanol. The identification of biosurfactants was done using FT-IR. The application of biosurfactants for recovery cadmium metal ion was examined at room temperature, pH 6, and the contact time of 5 and 10 minutes. The concentration of recovery cadmium metal ion was identified using AAS. The optimum condition for production of biosurfactants was found at soybean oil concentration of 20% (v/v) in fermentation medium and 7 days fermentation. The recovery of biosurfactants showed that chloroform extract (chlo-biosrrhosoy) had the lowest surface tension and the biggest emulsification index. Chlo-biosrrhosoy had carboxylic as hydrophilic moieties and aliphatic long chain of hydrocarbon as hydrophobic moieties. The characteristics of chlo- biosrrhosoy showed that it had o/w emulsion type, decreased surface tension of palm oil till 48,6312%, could form emulsion of water and palm oil with the emulsion stability for 12 days, and had the value of CMC of 896,0024 mg/L. The capacity adsorption using Crude biosrrhosoy at the contact time of 10 minutes was 1,7657 mg/g and the capacity adsorption using chlo-biosrrhosoy at the contact time of 10 minutes was 0,5579 mg/g.
