    Abstract

    Advanced technologies development engender new media that makes human communication’s process lot easier. However, in the middle of era that easy-made by new media, there is a new phenomenon that called passive receiver. Passive receiver refers to individual that use media but don’t give feedback to messages that delivered by communicator. This phenomenon becomes a problem, where the communication’s process needs feedback for each messages. This phenomenon can be found in application-based communication, for example LINE. This study aimed to find out passive receiver’s motives in communication studies students’ communication forum with LINE Group Chats. This study used uses and gratifications theory as its theory. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. Meanwhile, for the obtained data’s discussion used motive theory from uses and gratifications theory that discussed about individual’s motives and gratifications of using certain medias, also discussed about how individual’s needs affect the building of motives in individual’s media using. This research’s data obtained from in-depth interviews toward determined interviewees. This research’s data validity used method triangulation. The results of this research indicated that passive receiver’s motives in communication group forum using LINE Group Chats were built by reasons that discussed in each categories from uses and gratifications theory. The reasons were found related to media selectivity, media involvement, purposes and habitual media uses. Mostly obtained reasons were relating to information needs, emotional and social factor from each individuals. Moreover, the factor of being late to the involvement to the group chats also became one of the factors that affects the most of interviewee to have the motives to become passive receiver in a group.
