    Abstract

    This study analyzed English textbook published by Ministry of Education and Culture in 2013. It was aimed to reveal whether the book meets the requirements of a good quality English Textbook in terms of: (1) core and basic competences; (2) approach and methodology; (3) authenticity of materials; (4) language; and (5) graphic and layout. The research method applied was content analysis study under the perspective of textbook evaluation. The sample of this study was English textbook for tenth graders semester 1 entitled “Bahasa Inggris”. The sources of data in this study were documents and informants. The documents used were the checklist instrument, English textbook, and the other documents related to this research. The informants of this study were two teachers and four students from one of private schools. The data were collected through document analysis and interview. In document analysis, the data were presented in checklist and field-note. For the interview, semi-structured interview was applied to get the teachers’ and students’ opinion toward the textbook. Triangulation of data sources and methods were used to verify the result. The data analysis technique was adopted from James Spradley’s Ethnographic Interview. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the book: (1) reflected the core and basic competences of the 2013 Curriculum; (2) implicitly represented scientific approach and method of the 2013 Curriculum; (3) had 75.9% of authentic materials; (4) met 93.7% of language appropriateness; and (5) had 94.7% of the requirements of good graphic/layout.
