    Abstract

    Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the main food crop in Indonesia, and its need for every year is increasing. Mentik Wangi is a local rice varieties of Indonesia. Mentik Wangi has a disadvantageous trait of long harvest period up to 4 months. An effort to improve the quality and reduce the dissadvantageous traits of Mentik Wangi rice is done trough plant breeding by gamma ray irradiation technology. The purpose of this study was to produce new individuals with good quality. The research was conducted at Experimental Field of FP UNS, Palur, Sukoharjo. Variables observed were plant height, total tillers, number of productive tillers, panicle length, number of seeds per panicle, panicle density index, weight of 1000 seeds, grain weight per clump and harvest age. The result of the research was some mutant plants that have the short harvest age trait which obtained from 150 Gy irradiation of code T1-T15 and 200 Gy of code T1-T25 with harvest age of 95 hst, based on plant height trait from 200 Gy irradiation of code T203 with 66 cm high and with highest productivity from 200 Gy irradiation of code T21 with 53 tillers, highest number of seeds per panicle from 150 Gy irradiation of code T86 with 240 seeds, highest weight of grain per clump from 150 Gy irradiation of code T195 by weight of 146,24 gram.
