This research is aimed to: (1) find out whether materials in the students’ English textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell” for grade VII Junior High School are appropriate with the basic competence in the 2013 Curriculum or not; and (2) find out whether the students’ English textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell” for grade VII Junior High School meets the criteria of good textbook suggested by Alan Cunningsworth or not. This study uses descriptive method, which refers to content analysis or documentary analysis. The researcher took 4 chapters of the book as the sample. The data were collected through the following collecting data techniques: (1) document analysis done by the researcher herself using checklist; (2) questionnaires which were distributed to students of class 7B of SMP N 4 Surakarta and the English teachers of grade 7 at SMP N 4 Surakarta; and (3) interview with 2 students of class 7B of SMP N 4 Surakarta and an English teacher of grade 7 at SMP N 4 Surakarta. The technique of analyzing data on this study involves: (1) familiarization and organization; (2) coding and reducing: (3) interpreting and reducing, as proposed by Ary et. al. (2010: 481-490). The result of this study shows that as many as 6 out of 21 indicators are developed in the WERB textbook. It means that there is only 28.57% of the total indicators that are fulfilled in the compatibility of materials in the WERB textbook with the Basic Competence of the 2013 Curriculum. Moreover, it was found that the WERB textbook has developed as many as 25 out of 45 indicators of good textbook’s criteria suggested by Alan Cunningsworth. It means 55.56% of the total indicators are met in the compatibility of the WERB textbook with Alan Cunningsworth’s criteria. From those result, it can be known that the WERB textbook still can be used for teaching and learning process in Junior High School grade 7. Furthermore, the users of this textbook are better for taking additional materials from other sources to fulfill the indicators which are not developed in the textbook and/or using modification of the activities made by the teacher.
