    ABSTRACT Fransiskus Meirawan Kurniadi. 2006. SYNTHESIS OF EUGENYL OXY-p- METHYLENE BENZOIC ACID AND CATIONIC POLYMERIZATION CATALYZED BY BF3O(C2H5)2. Thesis. Chemistry Department. Mathematic and Science Faculty. Sebelas Maret University Research about synthesis of eugenyl oxy-p-methylene benzoic acid by Williamson etherification reaction and cationic polymerization of poly(eugenyl oxy-p-methylene benzoic) acid with BF3O(C2H5)2 as catalyst had been done. The polymer was expected to be useable as a new chelating ligand for solvent extraction in liquid membrane transport. Synthesis of eugenyl oxy-p-methylene benzoic acid was done by Williamson etherification reaction of eugenol, NaOH and p-chloro methyl benzoic acid. Eugenyl oxy-p-methylene benzoic acid had been done by cationic polymerization with BF3O(C2H5)2 as catalyst at 40-50 0 C, using benzene as medium and in nitrogen atmosphere. The structure analysis of eugenyl oxy-p- methylene benzoic acid was done by Fourier Transform Infra Red and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy, while the structure analysis of poly(eugenyl oxy-p-methylene benzoic) acid was done by Fourier Transform Infra Red. The structure characterization was done by Differential Thermal Analyzer and the relative molecular weight was determined by Ostwald viscometry method. Synthesis of eugenyl oxy-p-methylene benzoic acid produced 53.71% of white brown-powder. Polymerization of poly(eugenyl oxy-p-methylene benzoic) acid produced 24.21% of dark brown-solid. From the calculation of relative molecular weight determination of poly(eugenyl oxy-p-methylene benzoic) acid obtained is 1113845 g/mole.
