    Abstract

ABSTRACT IGNATIUS SUPRIH SUDRAJAT. Effect of Socio-Economic Factors on Efficiency of Organic Rice Farming in Boyolali Central Java. (ENDANG SITI RAHAYU, as a Chairman, KUSNANDAR and SUPRIYADI as members of the Advisory Committee). This research explored about the efficiency of organic rice farming that influenced by socio-economic factors with stochastic frontier approach (cross section data) and estimated with Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) and also the farmer behavior on making decisions in the face of the production risk with Just and Pope model on organic rice farming in Boyolali, Central Java. The research was conducted on 216 organic rice farmers as a sample during two planting seasons with purposive sampling method. Stochastic frontier method is equation model to estimate the parameters of the socio-economic factors that will affect the efficiency in order to be close to the maximum (frontier). In this model, the socio-economic factors that affecting the efficiency (Technical Efficiency, Allocative Efficiency, and Economic Efficiency) of production, production cost, and profit and also the farmers’ behavior on making decision in the face of the production risk on organic rice farming can be seen. This model was called composed error model because the error term consists of two components, namely the external factor/ errors caused by factors that can’t be controlled by the farmers (vi) and internal/ errors caused by factor that can be controlled by the farmers (ui). Error due to internal factors (ui) is composed of economic and social factors. As the result, the most dominant socio-economic factor was farm management (in production and profit) and the role of farmer groups and agricultural counselors (in cost production). In production risk, the behavior of organic rice farmers in facing production risk are 46,30% farmers make risk averse decision (risk averse) and 53,70% other farmer dare to face risk (risk seeking). It’s mean the behavior of organic rice farmers in Boyolali more dare to face the risk (risk seeking). Keywords: efficiency, organic rice farming, production, production cost, production risk, profit, stochastic frontier
