ABSTRACT Writing skill in Indonesian language should be mastered by foreign students joining BIPA program. However, writing by using correct linguistic rules is not an easy thing. This study aims to describe: (1) the use of the word formation with affixation, reduplication, and composition in the students’s writing of BIPA program; (2) constraints on the use of the word formation with affixation, reduplication, and composition in the students’s writing of BIPA program; and (3) efforts to overcome the obstacle of using the word formation with affixation, reduplication, and composition in the students’s writing of BIPA program. This research is included in qualitative research. The research used case study approach. The sources of the data were documents and informants. The data in this research were collecting using referring technique, recording technique, and in-depth interview. The data validity test used triangulation technique of source, theory, and informant review. The data were analyzed using agih or distribusional method. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, affixation was found as many as 287 words. Affixes are grouped into three, namely prefix (60.91%), suffix (22.19%), and confix (16.9%). The correct use of affixation is 66.90%, while the incorrect use of affixation is 33.10%. Furthermore, reduplication was found as many as 26 words. Reduplication is classified into three types, whole repetition (73.08%), partial repetition (7.69%), and repetition of affix combinations (19.23%). Reduplication error that was found was 19.23%. Meanwhile, the composition found as many as 47 words. Composition error that was found was 10.64%. Furthermore, the compound word is divided into three criteria, namely the construction of word class, nature, and meaning. Second, the constraints of using the word formation are caused by several factors, they are from (a) the learners, (b) the teacher, (c) the textbook, (d) the time, and (e) the environment. Third, the effort to overcome the obstacle of using the word can be done by the teacher and the students. Efforts that can be done by teachers, including the use of appropriate learning strategies, improve the mastery of the material, coordinate among learners, and the use of teaching materials from Indonesia. Meanwhile, the efforts of BIPA students can be done are having self-study and multi-training, having good lectures, interacting with Indonesians, and reading many Indonesian literatures.
