    Abstract

    This research investigates the grammatical errors committed by eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Boyolali in their narrative text. The objectives of this research are: (1) to identify the grammatical errors committed by students in their narrative text, (2) to identify the types of error in the grammatical error categories, and (3) to find out the sources and causes that influence the students making errors. This study is conducted using qualitative design. The data are collected from ten narrative texts written by the students. This research focuses on grammatical errors. The results of this research show that: (1) there are 559 grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Boyolali in their narrative texts. The errors are categorized into eight categories which are error on verb tense, error on verbs, error on conjunction, error on preposition, error on article, error on singular-plural, error on passive voice, and error on word order. Error on verb tense, verbs and conjunction are figured out as three dominant errors. (2) Four types of error are found in the grammatical error categories, namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Misformation dominates the total number of error types. (3) Interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer found as the major sources of the errors. In addition, first language interference becomes the dominant cause that influences the students committing the errors.
