    Abstract

Mariyah Mustaqimah, G0014150, 2017. Incidence comparation of allergic rhinitis in children with exclusive breast feeding and formula milk. Essay. Faculty of Medicine. Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. Background: Exclusive breastfeeding coverage in Indonesia is still far from being expected, one of them is because of working mother and difficulty to give milk to her child, while exclusive breastfeeding contains material not found in formula milk. These materials can reduce the risk of allergies in children, one of which is an allergic rhinitis which is an inflammation of the nasal mucous layer by exposure to allergens. This can interfere with the daily activities of children. This study aims to determine the incidence of allergic rhinitis in children with exclusive breast milk and formula milk. Methods: This research used observational analytics method with a research plan of case control. The research was conducted in November 2017. The sample was children of 3-6 years old who are kindergarten students in Jebres District, Surakarta along with their parent. The sampling technique used is consecutive sampling of each sample that meets the criteria of the research put into the study until a certain time, so that the number of samples obtained as much as 60. All data obtained by using a questionnaire which is then analyzed by Chi-Square test. Results: The incidence of allergic rhinitis in children with a history of exclusive breastfeeding was lower than in children with a history of formula feeding because the results obtained were significant (p = 0.001) based on Chi-square test results. The incidence of allergic rhinitis in children with a history of formula feeding was 6,571 times greater than children with a history of exclusive breastfeeding (Odds Ratio = 6,571, CI 95% = 2,109 - 20,479). Thus, the hypothesis in this study is accepted. Conclusions: The incidence of allergic rhinitis in children with exclusive breast feeding is smaller than formula milk. Keywords: allergic rhinitis, exclusive breast feeding, formula milk, comparison.
