    Abstract

Nurul Hidayah, G0014181, 2017. Correlation Between Neck Circumference and BMI in Junor High School Student, Mini Thesis, Faculty of Medicine, Sebelas Maret University. Background: Adolescence is a period when growth accelerates is occured, one of them is the growth of body weight and height. These changes often occur uncontrolled and it is resulting in pathological conditions such as overweight until obesity. Body Mass Index (BMI) becomes the standard indicator to determine the status of obesity. Some studies show the neck circumference is closely related to upper body fat and correlates with BMI at the age of children until adulthood. This study aims to determine the corelation of neck circumference and BMI in junior high school student. Method: This research used analytic observation method with cross sectional approach. The subjects were junior high school children aged 12-16 years (n = 106 male respondents, 59 female respondents) in Warga Surakarta JHS. Respondents were selected based on exclusion and inclusion criteria. The researcher performed anthropometric measurements of weight, height and neck circumference. Respondents filled out questionnaires related to date of birth, gender, date of menarche, and ethnicity of both parents. The variables were studied are BMI and neck circumference. Data were analyzed by Rank Spearman correlation test. After that, a linear regression model was developed by including other variables, menarche age (in girls). Results: The results showed a significant association between BMI and neck circumference (p = 0.00 and r = 0.796 for boys, p = 0,000 and r = 0.743 for girls). Other factor related to BMI in girls was menarche age (p = 0.016 and r = 0.314). Conclusion: There was a strong correlation between neck circumference and BMI in junior high school children. In girls, menarche age was negatively correlated with BMI values with weak correlation. Keywords: Neck circumference, BMI, adolescence, correlation, cross sectional
