    Abstract

    Movie as a mass media commonly function as entertain and educate the viewers. Based on the movie that has been seen, the viewers could get values from the movie makers. Instead of giving entertainment and education, there are some movies considered as controversial because of its vulgar content and spreading negative impact, one of them is Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. The study aims to analyze representation of patriarchy that male main character named Christian Grey. Analyzing representation of patriarchy reffered to aspect of patriarchy on Kamla Bhasin’s book. This study uses qualitative method. The technique used to analyze this data is semiotic analysis by Roland Barthes which will obtain the analysis as denotation, connotation, and myth. The result of the study shows that Christian Grey has applying patriarchy ideology based on aspect of patriarchy by Kamla Bhasin. There are female reproduction, control of female sexuality, female’s mobility, and property and economic source. From this 125 minutes movie, there was six scenes which become corpus to analyzed using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis. Anastasia Steele, a victim of patriarchy ideology tried to fight against patriarchy at some scenes by responding Christian’s attitude towards her. In the end, her effort to fight against him ended up with failure because Christian has more dominance than Anastasia.
