    Abstract

    Sonic crystal defect is commonly associated with the changes on scatterer geometrical dimension or due to its replacement from the initial position. Accordingly, the defect of sonic crystal and its acoustical characteristics are related to the lattice problems. An experimental realization of a new two-dimensional sonic crystal featuring local defect introduced here in this paper. The acoustic characteristics analysis of the sonic crystal defect is related to the specific local scatterer instead of lattice defect as commonly discussed in the literature. Due to these purposes, the sonic crystal model constructed from PVC tube in a 3 by 3 cubical formation. All scatterer has a pair of small horizontal slit-like opening on the wall, and the segment in between is pressed inward to form a small concave orifice on the scatterer body. The whole nine scatterer has a similar geometrical dimension to be put inside impedance tube for insertion lost and frequency response analysis. The results show that the proposed scatterer defect approach has the better insertion loss performance compared to the lattice defect model. It also brings the possibility for customization of the sonic crystal local resonant by using single geometrical dimension scatterer.
