    Abstract

    The metal casting industry is growing rapidly required the industry continue to produces quality product by improve the properties of molding. The purpose of this study was to determined: (1) The effect of adding waterglass to permeability on sand casting. (2) The effect of adding waterglass on sand casting to gasholes deffect. (3) The effect of adding waterglass on sand casting to quality of aluminium. The research uses drysand mold with consist the addictive of silica sand, water and waterglass as binder. The method in the study is an experimental method by varying the addition of waterglass. The independent variable in this research are waterglass variation with concentration of 10%, 15%, 20% and the dependent variable are permeability, gashole defect and quality of aluminium casting. The analysis was done by conducting permeability testing by means of permeability tester to find out the quantity of gas flow that passes throught the sand casting. then, testing of quality aluminium casting wast done by hardness testing and structur mikro. The defect analysis uses visual observation which is corroborated by a defect volume measurement. The result of research shows that waterglass affects to the permeability, gasholes defect and quality of aluminium casting. The result adding of waterglass variation 10%, 15% and 20% in sand casting are: (1) Waterglass variation at level of 10%, 15%, and 20% on permeability value respectively 184.67 cm3/min, 200 cm3/min, and 89.67 cm3/min. The smallest permeability occurs at levels 20% waterglass is 89.67 cm3/min and the highest permeability occurs at level 15% waterglass is 200 cm3/min. (2) Waterglass variations with levels of 10%, 15%, and 20% produce gasholes defects respectively 5.69 cm3, 4.43 cm3, and 17.20 cm3. The gasholes defect at least occurs at level 15% waterglass that is 4.43 cm3 and gasholes defect is mostly found in 20% waterglass variation is 17.20 cm3. (3) Variations of waterglass addition prodused quality based on metal hardness and micro structure. Variations of waterglass with level 10%, 15%, and 20% produced hardness aluminium metal and structure micro respectively 74.5 HB with uniform distibution of matriks Al-Si. 85.3 HB with uniform distribution of matriks Al-Si and <70 HB with ununiform distribution of matriks Al-Si. The smallest metal hardness occurs at level 20% waterglass is under 70 HB. And the highest meatl hardness pccurs at lever 15% waterglass is 85.3 HB.
