    Abstract

    Maria Priskila, G0004148, 2008. Effect of Garlic Extracts on Reduction of Total Cholesterol and HDL Cholesterol Ratio in Hypercholesterolemia Rats (Rattus norvegicus). Medical Faculty of Sebelas Maret Surakarta. Garlic has been widely recognized as herbal medicine for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia. The principle bioactive compound, allicin, can influence cholesterol metabolism, reduce total cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol. The purpose of present research is to find out the effect of garlic extracts on reduction of total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol ratio in hypercholesterolemia rats. Present research is an experimental research with pre and post test control group design. The animal trial that used is ± 3rd mount, ± 200 gram, male, wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). The rats divided into 2 groups. Before treatment, all rats (group I and II) induced by a high-cholesterol diet for two weeks, to get a hypercholesterolemic condition. Group I, control group, 15 rats induced by a high-cholesterol diet. Group II, treatment group, 15 rats induced by a high- cholesterol diet too, with oral 0,432 gram/200 gram body weight/day garlic extract. The treatment is occurred for 25 days. The source of the data is taken before the treatment and after the last treatment, by taking the blood from orbital sine of rats, which had been fasted for 12 hours, and the level of serum cholesterol total and level of serum cholesterol HDL checked from both group, then the result had been analyzed with t-test. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the oral induction of 0,432 gram/200 gram body weight/day garlic extract for 25 days on rats, can not reduce total therefore increase cholesterol and HDL cholesterol ratio of serum, even not significant (p>0,05). The decrease of total cholesterol in treatment group, and decrease of HDL cholesterol in both group, are significant (p<0,05).
