    Abstract

    Has been conducted research on the utilization of losses on the optical fiber with making the design of load measuring tool based on optical fiber. The working principle of the loading gauge is to measure the value of the intensity of light arising from the existence of bending symptoms on optical fibers that cause losses in optical fibers. The optical fiber which used made with POF (Polymer Optic Fiber) with 3 mm diameter which given cladding-coating and coated by rubber type RTV 588 to minimalize fatigue occurs. In this research used 7 press cylinders pin with the distance between pins 5 cm and amount of the crutch springs on the loading gauge 10 pieces. Research begin with knowing the value of spring constant on the load measuring instrument which then got the value of 1.168 x 105 N/m. The research continued with performing a press test by the load on the MTM tool to the optical fiber on the load measuring instrument in the range 0-1000 kg with variation 50 kg. Based on the result of the research, the graph of the relationship between mass and loss on optical fiber before and after coated rubber. Gradient values obtained are 0.972 and 0.987. Then obtain the graph of the relationship between mass and transmittance on fiber optics that have been coated rubber with a gradient value obtained for 0.990. From the results, it can be concluded that the tool can be subjected to a force of 97 kN or a mass burden of 9 tons.
