    Abstract

    The research aimed to know (1) the difference of cognitive ability in applying problem based learning (PBL) and conventional learning in biology class X; (2) the difference of problem solving skills in applying problem based learning (PBL) and conventional learning in biology class X. The research is conducted in quantitative research with quasi experiment method with posttest only control design research. The population in this study is all students of class X MIPA in 8 Surakarta senior high school consisting of three classes. Sampling using cluster random sampling technique obtained class X MIPA 2 as control class using conventional learning with the number of 27 students and class X MIPA 1 as experiment class using PBL with the number of 28 students. Data collection was done by testing techniques to measure cognitive ability and problem solving ability and non test for observation and documentation data. Hypothesis test in research using Anova test assisted with SPSS program version 21. The results showed (1) there was no significant difference between the results of cognitive ability between the application of problem based learning model and conventional learning; (2) there is a real difference to the problem solving skills between the application of problem based learning model and conventional learning.
