    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Ika Dhamayanti, D0213050, INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION PATTERNS IN DEVELOPING BRAND NEW SELF CONCEPT (A Descriptive Qualitative Research Communication Pattern Between Yayasan Sahabat Kapas’s Mentor and Children as the Client in Correctional Institution class IIB Klaten, in Developing Brand New Self Concept), Thesis, Sebelas Maret Surakarta University. The violation of law that being conducted by children is increasing every year in Indonesia, including the Karesidenan Surakarta region which Klaten District is the number one district with the most case on law violation conducted by children. Negative self concept is one of the reason why children violate the laws. The life inside prison can triggers stress and depression so it is feared that it will worsen the children condition especially their psychology. But with the presence of Yayasan Sahabat Kapas with their mentoring program, yayasan sahabat kapas wants to help the children to pass the positive message to develop a brand new self concept, from negative to positive. Intensive communication is needed in this process. According to the theory of interaction symbolic that explain looking glass self which explain that by communicating with each other, someone can understand himself because he can judge himself through the views of other people about himself. This allows him o change his attitude and behavior in the midst of society in accordance with the self concept that he has. This research is being done in correctional institution class IIB Klaten. This research use descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The data source for this research is coming from in-depth interview, observation, and literature study. The sample is taken from purposive sampling method. And to analyze the data, writer use interactive analysis miles and huberman with three stages consist of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion withdrawal until verification and for data validation, this research used source triangulation. This research concludes that: (1) There is a change in children’s self concept, and it is changing from negative to positive. (2) There are a strong impression that communication takes a part in the development of somebody’s self concept. The communication pattern that formed in the mentoring process can be identified as the circular communication pattern, which is a communication process that the process itself goes on because there are feedback between the communicator and communicant. (3) There are looking glass self syndrome inside the development of brand new self concept, which explain that the children develop their new self concept based on mentor’s evaluation and judgment.
