    ABSTRACT NIKEN DWI HAPSARI, D1215037, The Information-Seeking Patterns of an Urban Society (A Case Study in the urban village of Braga, Sub District of Sumur Bandung, City of Bandung, West Java Province) Department of Communication Sciences, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta. 2017, 101 pages The purpose of this study intends to determine the information seeking patterns of an urban society, particularly in the urban village of Braga, located in the city of Bandung. An urban society has the advantage of easier access and added effort in terms of obtaining information compared to a rural society. These tendencies shape the diverse needs of information of urban societies. To meet these needs, the society seek information through various types of media. This research uses multiple-methods. The first method is a quantitative approach through a survey by distributing questionnaires to 75 respondents. The second method is a qualitative approach, in the form of in-depth interviews conducted to several informants. Interview results are intended to sharpen the results obtained from the survey. The results show that urban communities have diverse information needs, with information on politics, government and the world as the most accessed at 74.6%, followed by information on household needs at 58%. The diversity of types of information needed and the accessibility of information has an impact on the information seeking process of societies with the use of internet as the most accessed source of information at 77.3%, followed by information seeking through interaction with neighbors or relatives at 68%. Furthermore, 56% of respondents stated that the motives or interests of urban societies in finding information, is mostly based on information seeking in order to obtain a reference to make decisions or to take action.
