    ABSTRACT Cynthia Erin Hadipratiwi. K6413016. CROSS CUTTING AFFILIATIONS IN THE STUDENTS OF SMP KRISTEN PELITA NUSANTARA KASIH SURAKARTA IN THE SCHOOL YEAR OF 2016/2017 ON SOCIAL INTEGRATION. Thesis. Surakarta: Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta, July 2017. The purposes of this study were to find out whether ethnic diversity could create social integration and find out that group activity is a type of cross cutting affiliations that will create social integration. Descriptive qualitative with qualitative approach was used in this study. The data were gained from informants, events, places and, documents. Sample of this study were taken by using purposive sampling technique. Interviews, observations, and document analysis were done to collect data. In order to gain valid data, validity test was done through source triangulation and method triangulation. The data were analyzed by using interactive analysis model. Based on the result of the study, it could be concluded that: 1) Ethnic diversity is able to create social integration if: a) communication and interaction among students show good and smooth result which is showed by forms of communication such as group study and exercise; b) conflicts among students happen very rarely, only a few cases of school order violation to certain students; c) students are able to encourage each other and support wider interests and purposes. 2) Group activity is one of cross cutting affiliations forms that will create social integration if: a) there are respective and appreciative of ethnic diversity among students; b) students are easier to adapt, accept other ethnics, and are able to help each other while take part in two different groups; c) students are able to keep and protect their own ethnic, also are able to help their friends with different ethnics who is experiencing difficulties; d) students are able to work together, it is showed by task division in two different groups, but it had not showed double role; e) students are able to support each other in form of watching their friends match, supporting, studying and training together, also praying for them. Therefore, it could be said that the students showed social integration and cross cutting affiliations, but these two things were not influence each other.
