    Abstract

Clustering technique is a visual network of ideas and relation, in which a writer constructs the relation between idea and clustering, and concentrates only on invention. This article is the result of quasi-experimental study on the effectiveness of clustering technique to teach writing viewed from students’ creativity at the tenth grade of one Senior High School in Madiun. The sampling used was cluster random sampling with two classes as sample, namely experimental class and control class. To collect the data, there were two instruments used in the research namely writing test and verbal creativity test. The data obtain were analyzed by using 2x2 multifactorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) and tukey. The results of this study reveal that: (1) clustering technique is more effective than direct instruction to teach writing; (2) students having high creativity have better writing skill than those having low creativity; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching techniques and students’ creativity. It shows that the use of clustering technique is effective to teach writing for the tenth grade of one Senior High School in Madiun. Therefore, it is recommended for English teachers to apply clustering technique in writing class, to promote an effective teaching writing.
