    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Febriana Endah Sri Utami. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NUMBERED HEADS TOGETHER (NHT) IN TEACHING CRITICAL READING (A Descriptive Study on the 11th Grade Students of SMA Negeri 6 Surakarta in the Academic Year 2016/2017). Thesis, Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University.June 2017. The aims of this research are: (1) to describe the process of teaching Critical Reading using Numbered Heads Together(NHT), (2) to investigate the problems faced by students in learning Critical Reading through NHT ctivities: and (3)whether NHT is effective to teach critical readingin term of helping the students cope with learning problem.. The research method used in this study is a descriptive research. This descriptive research was researched in the academic year of 2016/2017 at SMA N 6 Surakarta and in class XI-MIPA 3 consisting of 31 students. The research instruments used to collect the data in this study are observations, interviews and documents analysis. The data were analyzed to describe the implementation of NHT to help students cope with problems in learning critical reading. This research shows that NHT was able to help students cope with learning problems through some reasons, as follows: (1) NHT makes students active both to answer and give feedback, (2) NHT helps students to be more critical, and (3) NHT helps students overcome their problems in learning critical reading. Therefore, it is better for teacher to develop the teaching learning process and more aware about the time limit. Keywords: Numbered Heads Together, , Critical Reading
