    Abstract

    Aluminum alloy is one of the hard materials coupled with friction welding. FSSW is a solution to solve engineering problems in joining friction welding. Parameters affecting friction welding are time of friction, rotation speed, and depth of plunge. In this study, specimens were friction welded with rotation speed of 1600 rpm, dwell time 5 seconds, and plunge depth 4 mm. The weakness of the friction welding process is the decrease of strength, this is due to the friction welding done in solid condition. To improve the strength of FSSW welding, precipitation hardening method can be used. The precipitation hardening method is done in three stages, solution heat treatment, quanching and aging with artificial aging process. Artificial aging temperature varies between 135oC, 165oC, and 200oC with holding time in 7 hours, 8 hours, 9 hours, and 10 hours. The results showed that precipitation hardening caused increased hardness in welded joints. Specimens with a temperature of 165oC aging and holding time of 8 hours had a 48% hardness level of the specimen that had not been treated with heat and had a maximum tensile shear load of 5759 N.
