    Abstract

The research examines the representation of postmodern superhero as vigilante in the context of Michael Foucault’s subject and power relations from Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 (2010) movie. By viewing the characteristics of postmodern cultural product, Iron Man holds changeable values and has fluid characteristics. In this regard, Iron Man presents an ambiguous status whether he is a superhero or a vigilante. Taking into account Foucault advocates in the subject and power relations theory, Iron Man’s ambiguous status is defined through examining the discourse in the society. As the result, Iron Man who presents an inconsistent status – whether he is a superhero or a vigilante – is a superhero from the discourse perspective due to following the hero discourse in the society.
